Anne Katrine Senstad is an internationally working visual artist, researcher, curator, and film-maker. Her multi-disciplinary practice spans over 2 decades and is anchored in the intersection of installation art, photography, film and video, neon sculpture and light based spatial installations, text based art, land art, and site specificity, with a focus on the phenomena of perception and the language of our cognitive system in response to the properties of light, sound, and color. She is concerned with semiotic narration, sensorial aesthetics, ethics, and criticism, – the transformative and the transcendental ideas of art and philosophical practices. Senstad’s long term research and critical projects, are concerned with the humanities, social-political spaces, and culture, seeking an amalgamation for a new folklore.
Senstad has exhibited widely internationally since the mid 1990’s. In 2010 she completed a major public art commission entitled ETERNAL, for the Wolfe Center for Performing Arts at BGSU, Ohio, designed by the internationally renowned architecture firm Snøhetta, commissioned by Ohio State Percent for Art Program (OAC). The architecturally integrated art work consists of a 28′ x 86′ /10 meter x 30 meter Photography based mural covering the entire lobby. The art presents the experiential immensity of the infinite as a measurable space, the eternal, enveloping horizon, in dialogue with the building’s design. She has been shortlisted for numerous major public art commissions internationally.
Senstad is featured in the EMMY award winning WNET/PBS TV documentary series IMMERSIVE WORLD, (S1, E7 IMMERSIVE LIGHT), alongside James Turrell, Dan Flavin/DIA Foundation, and Anthony McCall. Senstad’s episode, Immersive Light – Sculptors of Light, has been aired on Canal+, France, RAI 5, Italy, Canal+ Arte, Brazil, and many more, and is available to stream on PBS.org until 2040. Senstad is the recipient of numerous awards and grants from Arts Council Norway, Office for Contemporary Art Norway, Association of Visual Artists, Norway, Fritt Ord, Norway, Forbundet Frie Fotografer, Norway, NYFA/Rauschenberg Foundation, New York(emergency grant), and Foundation for Contemporary Art New York.
In 2022 a monograph on her light and space practice, Neon Guides Me, was published on Praun & Guermouche, and includes essays by Senstad’s collaborators; acclaimed composer JG Thirlwell, the late composer and polymath Catherine Christer Hennix(1948-2023), as well as thinkers, historians and writers: Andres Kurg (EE), Marianne Solberg (NO), Erik Meling (NO), Dr Aura Seikkula (FI), Sanna Karimaki-Nuutinen (FI), Sarah Walko(US), Patrick Rolandelli (US).
